Welcome to Shafer Middle School! Get ready for a fun and exciting year in 6th grade Science. We look forward to helping guide you in becoming amazing life-long scientists this year! The following information should help prepare you for a successful and great year in science.
Curriculum:
We will cover areas within Life, Earth, and Physical science this year. You are invited to look over the Science Standards for 6th grade, located at the following website:
http://www.state.tn.us/education/ci/cistandards2001/sci/ciscig68stand.htm
We follow these standards to make sure all students are best prepared for testing in the spring.
Grading Policy:
Students need to be aware that their 9 – week grade will be based on the following 3 areas: homework, class work, and tests. We will have homework an average of 2 to 3 times a week. It should normally require no more than 15 minutes out of class to complete. Students who turn in all homework on time will have a 100/A+ averaged into their 9-week grade for report cards. The following is very important: For full credit, homework is due at the beginning of class the next school day. It can be accepted as late work if turned in by the end of the day it was due. If work is not turned in that day, 5 points will be deducted from the 100/A+ 9 wks homework grade and cannot be made up. Work completed in class may be turned in that day. If not finished, it can be taken home, but must be turned in the next school day for credit. If a student is absent the day homework/class work is due, their work is to be turned in the first day they return. Students who are absent when homework/class work is assigned have 3 days to get that work turned in for full credit.
Materials:
Students are expected to bring the following to class every day:
1. Textbook (these will be issued during the first 2 weeks.)
2. Agenda: this is to be filled out every day. (It will always be on the board for students to copy.)
3. At least 2 sharpened, wooden pencils (please, no mechanical pencils, as stated on supply list!)
4. Green, plastic, 3 prong, 2 pocket folder with notebook paper
5. Red marking pen
Science workbooks will be kept in and worked on in the classroom until we finish the chapter. The pages will then be torn out, stapled, and taken home to finish any work not completed in class.
Classroom Events:
*Science labs
*4-H: we only have 3 monthly meetings, but we do participate in Clover Bowl (more info to come later!)
* Periodic class projects.
